I was raised a Jehovah's Witness (3rd. generation) where later I "studied my way out" of it by both Biblical study and the honest study of the teachings and history of the religious movement known today as the Jehovah's Witnesses. Many like myself have had a crisis of faith in their religion weather it be JW, Mormon, Catholic etc. and leave that system often at great cost, personal struggle and sacrifice often losing friends, reputation, family and even marrages and jobs in the process. Most stop there. Instead of taking that sceptical and truth seeking spirit and applying it to Biblical history and teachings, they most often are afraid to question further. Why? Because we still hold to our own programming namely that to question your religion is to question God himself and at a greater level, the book (the Bible) that the religion is based on. Fear. Fear of what you subconsciously know you might find. Then what? Where does that lead you? You then realize that your "faith" is like a mental crutch that allows you to function in a social system of a shared reality that are based on assumptions and belief systems often devoid of facts or even reality. Its a brave soul indeed that can follow the truth wherever it leads. Few can stare back at the void and say: "I want the truth wherever that leads!" and be able to follow that path often alone and exposed in the rarified atmosphere above religion, fear and faith.

You can grow up having "faith" in Santa Claus. My wife wanted to be married in a "church" so she chose the Greek Orthodox church. We started attending and right away i was struck with what was going on during the "services". I was raised a protestant Christen. I was never exposed to Catholic (Orthodox) teachings and ritual. So i was taken back with all the ritualistic pomp and ritual integrated into the weekly service. In the Orthodox system, it is VERY ritualistic and repeditive playing out rituals handed down over many centuries . I came to the following conclusion: 1)... The Orthodox church is a Pauline creation interwoven with pegan rituals the "Gentile" converts centuries ago practiced when worshiping their god or gods. 2)... In the past, most lay people could not read ir had access to the Biblical scrolls. So they relied on the "father" or priest to tell them scriptural "truth" and reverance for the scriptures and what it contains. 3)... The rituals gave the ignorant congrogation of former pegans a sence of worship and reverance while at the same time being spoon fed small snippets of selected portions of scripture. Back in the day, this ceremonial "worship"was common in pegan temples of worship where the priest had the rare literacy skills to read the "sacred texts" and interprit them for the illiterate masses. 4)... Today, what was once only accessable to the initiated or literate is available to all. So, all these rituilistic traditions of centuries past is unnecessary. There is a reason why at one time the church outlawed the possession and reading of the Bible outside the clergy class.
